Storyline

Talk of a film on the disabled or 'differently-abled', and we all know that it is one subject our industry is never comfortable with. Mostly, our films end up showcasing only their physical constraints and their struggle with a prejudiced world that is out there to humiliate them.Margarita With A Straw has none of these. Shonali Bose, who debuted with the critically acclaimed Amu in 2005, makes another lovable young woman, Laila (Kalki Koechlin), hold her second film together.Laila is differently-abled, but that's not what defines her. She is a young woman with very 'normal' aspirations, confusions and apprehensions, and like any other normal person, is ready to experiment. Shonali's narrative is not about whipping up sympathy or compassion. Rather, it is a succinct reminder to all of us to correct our mindsets and be more human.That Laila is not here begging for our sympathy is made clear very early in the film. And Shonali minces no words, or even sequences, to drive home her point. Here's how she goes about it: Laila's band is awarded the top prize in a college festival, and the emcee says: "Jab humein pata chala ki is gaane ke lyrics ek disabled person ne likha hai to hume ye award isi group ko dena pada. Laila, aapki problems normal logo se alag rahi hongi. Will you please share your experience with us?" A fuming Laila shows her the middle finger and leaves the stage.The three women actors in the movie are just brilliant. Kalki makes her character look convincing and endearing, while Revathy is amazingly strong as her mother. And the third, Sayani Gupta's portrayal of a blind woman who becomes one of the most important characters in Laila's life, is touching.Khannum (Sayani) is a strong girl, whose blindness does not stop her from braving through the wrath of police while protesting on the streets of New York against the cops. She also introduces Laila to her sexuality. At the same time, she is also the person who cries her heart out when she discovers that she has been cheated on. Sayani makes all these aspects very believable.Margarita with a Straw, in fact, is not a story of the struggles of its characters. Rather, it is one that tracks the self-discovery of a young woman, who happens to be a patient of cerebral palsy.The one-hour-forty-minute-long movie, however, does distract the audience at times. There are sequences which appear rather disconnected. The first one hour of the film is engaging, but beyond a point, Margarita With A Straw appears badly chopped. There are a few random sequences that don't actually add up to anything in the narrative at all.Still, what stands out the most in this film is Kalki's acting, and Shonali's courage to discuss disabled people and their desires, aims and sexuality.Should you go watch this film even if you don't know of any differently-abled person in your life? Movie Review : Touted as sex comedy, Harshavrdhan Kulkarni's Hunterr hits theatres on Friday. Is it yet another vulgar flick in the name of an adult film or is it something you can actually watch without being 'sick'? Read on to find out.

Hunterrr is not great, but director Harshvardhan Kulkarni, who has also written the script,  has managed to churn out an interesting film that might become a stepping stone in this genre for Hindi cinema. The film traces the life of Mandar (Gulshan Deviah) whose only aim in life is to have sex with women.

When he meets Trupti (Radhika Apte) in a set up for arranged marriage, he realises that being a player was fun but he now wants to give it up altogether for the sake of a settled, married life with her.

Hunterrr is not a love story, but it is not a sex-tinted, vulgar view of life either. It is a story about a kid who discovers sexual fantasies, gets to explore the fantasies in real life and eventually strikes a connection with a woman for whom he wants to quit it all.

And in a departure from the usual sex comedies, the movie does not objectify women. As Gulshan aka Mandar says, he just "smells the needs of a woman". Unlike a Masti, there are no camera movements following a woman's anatomy.

What makes Hunterrr a progressive film is also the fact that the protagonist does not pounce upon every other woman or girl he sets his eyes on - he waits for their consent. And so he, too, has his share of rejections and failures in his expeditions.

However, for all its good intentions and cinematic beauty, Hunterrr fails to become the milestone for its genre. The film is stretched, especially in the second half. Harshvardhan Kulkarni defies the chronological way of story-telling, and the tool that could have added intrigue to the narrative, actually brings confusion. There is a clear attempt to validate Mandar's actions relating them to incidents in his earlier life, but most of the times, the connection is not clear to the audience.

As for the performances, both Gulshan Deviah and Radhika Apte effortlessly step into their characters. Gulshan adds charm and cuteness to the Amol Palekar-type of a guy who wants a more colourful life and ends up being THE player in his boys' gang. Radhika, too, brings life to her character, Trupti.

Gabbar is about a common man who rises against the corruption after losing his family in an earthquake-building mishap, which was indirectly related to corrupt people. His style is different, he is punishing corrupt officers & wants to bring about change in the society. The most accurate dialogue of the film summarizes our society. “Hum log sirf ek hi kaam puri imaandaari se karte hai. Beimaani”

Gabbar is all about Akshay Kumar & his acting. He is brilliant as Aditya/Gabbar. Shruti Hassan is also there in the film but overshadowed by Akshay Kumar. If you see the film, you’ll see that almost all actors are overshadowed by Akki in this film. Story is very cliché and you might feel like remembering films like Jay Ho! & other social reforms related films. But it won’t disappoint you one bit.

Acting by all the actors is brilliant. Direction is kickass. Editing is a bit sloppy, but the cinematography makes up for it. Songs are not memorable & honestly, 3 songs in such a film look out of place. The film would have been more enjoyable if these songs were absent. Overall background music is pleasing though.  The length is perfect, especially the climax. It was very easy to screw up the climax by following the sheep approach of Indian cinema but they did something different & made the film almost perfect!

Storyline: Democracy ki Jai ho is short, fast and snappy. The film is more like a satirical play with two sets. The edited shots seen during the end credits tell us that a lot of ruthless editing went on which is a good thing as it keeps the movie focused and well paced.

A hen wanders into the No Mans Land area at the LoC between India and Pakistan. Who does it belong to? Both countries think its theirs and India sends a Jawan into the area to retrieve it. He gets stuck there with the hen with all guns trained on him. Should the Indian army launch an offensive? The Defense Minister, busy with her bags and shoes (guess who?) refuses to take a decision and forms a Parliamentary Committee. The stage is set. One part of the film follows the action on the border, the other part follows the shenanigans of the Committee members as they debate passing a Bill on defense matters.

The film has a very good screenplay and the dialogues and action get really funny at times. Only towards the end does the farce degenerate into slapstick at the Parliamentary end which makes it a bit too over the top. The resolution at the Border is pretty well done.

The ensemble cast which has a few well known actors like Annu Kapoor (hamming it up deliciously as a Tamilian), Om Puri as an ageing sulking politician, Satish Kaushik and others keep the action under control and provide some great laughs.

This is  fun little movie to catch in between lunch and your evening sundowner. If you enjoy watching the farce that Indian democracy can be sometimes you will get your kicks out of this one.

Story line: The protagonist of the curiously titled 'Kaagaz Ke Fools' is the ironically named writer Purushottam Tripathi. His name may mean "the greatest man" but he's actually anything but that. The film, at first, appears to be about the struggle of an artist - his friends and even his wife urge him to write popular, commercially viable stuff whereas he's more concerned about his artistic integrity. The film shoots itself in the foot at the very outset by presenting the hackneyed, narrow view about art: the "socially relevant" stuff which only a few intellectuals read or the spicy pulp which caters to the lowest common denominator. The film's stance on art is hugely problematic to begin with - it clearly argues that the social message-driven stuff is by default more virtuous than "entertainers", portraying people working in the latter mode as some sort of decadent villains possessing all the bad qualities a human being can possess - but what jars even more is just how clueless and meandering the film is. It almost runs on auto-pilot mode, starting off as a loud Punjabi comedy, which then transforms into a tedious drama (as in the Guru Dutt classic, the protagonist here is struck between two women - one who keeps nagging and one who accepts him for who he is) and culminates with a corny lecture about "Lakshmi" and "Saraswati". The drama is so haphazardly built that there's absolutely nothing in it to make us care. For a film that takes a condescending, self-important stance about art, it's ironic how artless and lifeless 'Kaagaz Ke Fools' is. It's an utter waste of an interesting cast - Vinay Pathak, Saurabh Shukla, Rajender Sethi and the lovely Mugdha Godse are wasted in thankless parts. There's something especially weird about Godse's dialogue delivery - I'm not sure if it's the strained Punjabi accent or something else, but I almost ended up wishing for subtitles - that's how indecipherable her dialogues are. That basically goes for pretty much everything in the film. It's so dull, hollow and shabby, I wonder why they even bothered to make this film. 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' was an exquisitely crafted melodrama, a film that showed how sentimentality can be elegant too. 'Kaagaz Ke Fools' is, well - I'm not a fan of puns but this feels just about right - extremely foolish.

Story Line: Crime, Mafia, Guns, Babes, Love Stories and some extra bit of coincidences are quite the ingredients for most Emraan Hashmi films. But not most films have been sci-fi thrillers either. 

 

Mr. X is the first sci-fi  film by Emraan Hashmi and Vishesh Films. It has all the above elements, but lacks the major X factor required. 

 

Raghu Rathod and Sia Verma are ATT agents who save the day (making them superheroes already) by risking their lives each time. Finally, Raghu proposes to Sia and they decide to get married. 

Just a day prior to their wedding, they are called upon by the ATT chief to battle a terrorist attack intending to assassinate the Chief Ministers at a function later that day. While both Raghu and Sia get back to duty, this operation turns out to be a ploy to trap Raghu who ends up shooting the CM with his girlfriend on the snipper’s target. All of this being a part of the larger political ploy involving the son of the CM and the ATT Chief who’s eyeing a promotion. 

 

With all this captured on TV, and Raghu killing the CM, he is then led to a refinery where is supposed to be burnt alive with a blast in the factory. But he survives under the debris with some organic changes in his body due to the radiation. 

 

Mr. X is born who comes back to fight the system and save the name for Raghu Rathod who has been labelled as a criminal and cheat of the highest degree. 

 

PS. Mr. X is invisible without sunlight and blue neon lights. (Much like Mr. India)

 

While the plot holds enough scope, the script of the film looks like a terrible masala of all of Hashmi’s prior films! Of course he is impressive, but Arunoday Singh as the villain is absolutely astounding. So is Tanmay Bhatt in the supporting role, being a part of one of those films that he regularly beats the shit out of in his jokes and scripts. 

 

To be honest, I don’t see much of a difference in Amyra Dastur and Sonal Chauhan but Amyra as Sia definitely had a good role to pull off, stronger than anyone in the film. She does a decent job too!

 

Now there wasn’t much scope for songs in this film, whatever little are there do anything but impress the way Emi’s other songs do. Rather they are a forced distraction from a rather interesting ploy. 

 

The ring scene, proposal, backing out on Raghu scenes are pretty much reminiscent of Hashmi’s previous films. Leading to predictability and expected suspenses (not leaving them as one). The scenes that aren't dark have some breath taking locations, also leaving you to wonder the venue of the stroy.
